Baling twine! While most people wouldn’t look twice and such an insignificant accessory, many horse people hoard baling twine. Baling twine can be used for SO many things, the list is virtually endless.
One can purchase baling twine or simply pull the strings/twine off of your hay bales – a good idea to begin with, so horses don’t accidentally chew or swallow the twine or pieces of it.
To discard it, pull as many of the strings or twine out of your hay or wherever you have it and tie them all together in one big knot and throw it away. This keeps the strings together and prevents any horses from chewing on stray strands that might have escaped.
But before you discard that twine, here are some things you can use it for!
Baling Twine Uses
**Use as a makeshift blanket/bottle/ribbon holder. I use twine at horse shows and tie pieces to the front of the barred stalls to hang ribbons from, loop blankets or boots over, or hang fly spray or Show Sheen for easy-to-reach use. You can do this at home too.
**Use it as a knife. Baling twine can be looped through another piece of twine and see-sawed back and forth to cut the tied piece of twine. The friction causes the strands to split. No knife? No problem.
**Use it to hang fans. We live in hot, dry Phoenix, and fans are a must! I use several strands of baling twine to secure my fans to the stalls. They are durable and last for quite some time. Just make sure to tie them to where your horses can’t reach them.
**More hanging! Along with fans, baling twine can be used to tie jolly balls, salt rocks, and feed buckets. To make them sturdier, I braid several strands together and hang us jolly balls or buckets that way.
**Twine can be used for temporary fixes. Fence, blanket straps, missing halter pieces or broken halter, tie downs for tarps, makeshift lead rope, broken shoelaces, a belt, and emergency or temporary gate ties.
**For cleaning! Baling twine can be used as a sweat scraper to remove excess water from your horse. Get several strands together and ball them up to create a makeshift scrubber and scrub your buckets with!
**Secure your items with baling twine. Have a mishap with your vehicle? Keep your bumper on by tying it with baling twine (note** this is not a permanent fix!) Tie down things in your truck or trailer to keep them safe during travel.
Baling twine is never a bad thing to have on hand. I keep a few strings in my truck and horse trailer, and I use a crazy amount for hanging up things at horse shows. It is easy to cut down and yet it is strong enough to secure or hang things with. My fans are secured with baling twine too!
