It’s a win for everyone, really.

As the summer months commence the flies are as well. The flies have been particularly irritating this year due to a nice, wet monsoon season. Arizona has mild winters and hot summers and the bugs seem to thrive in the nice temperatures here.

The battle with bugs and flies has always been a hard one for horse owners. Luckily, a couple of years ago I decided to try a certain fly spray that has changed the game. It is the only type I use now and it WORKS.

What am I talking about? I am talking about the beautiful, bright yellow bottle of Pyranha Fly Spray.Image result for pyranha fly spray

This fly spray comes in a few different types.  There is the Wipe N Spray, which is what I normally grab, the aerosol can spray, and a spray system container which horse owners or anyone that has an automatic spray system can use.

It has a bright yellow label which makes it easy to find either at the store or online. The reason I started using this spray is because at horse shows I saw tons of people grabbing their yellow spray bottles to fly spray their horses.

I decided to give it a second look, and I am sure glad I did. My horses are too!

The Advantages

Pyranha has some noteworthy advantages. This is the only fly spray I use BECAUSE it WORKS. I can spray my horse and not have to worry about re-spraying until the next day because it repels that well.

Other bug repellents I had to continually reapply, which was not only a bit irritating, my horse got tired of the constant wet, and my bank account was feeling the effects of constantly having to purchase more. It works better than anything I’ve tried and it LASTS. That is the main reason I continue to use it.

Another advantage of Pyranha Fly Spray is that it has lanolin in it. Lanolin has been used to help dry, chapped skin, and on horses, it has a similar effect. The lanolin in the spray makes their coats not only shiny but soft and healthy. I really like this added bonus!

The type I use is called the “Wipe N Spray,” but I rarely wipe it, I just spray it on. You could use a rag to apply it or spray it directly on the horse and then wipe it to get even coverage, but to me, that is wasting a bit.

Pyranha can battle more than just flies. Gnats have appeared now that the rains have come to the desert, along with mysterious biting insects, ants, flies, and a myriad of other insects that love horses and their manure.

My horse seems less irritable and his tail has quieted its maddened swishing because this repellent repels all the bugs! I have noticed with another brand I used to use that even when I sprayed flies or other insects would still try to land and bite my horse. This brand seems to repel everything!

The Disadvantages

There are a couple of things I don’t like about the spray, but its effectiveness (to me) trumps any disadvantage. I have a horsey-friend who refuses to use Pyranha because she can’t stand the smell. It does have a strong citronella scent to it, which is part of the magic of the repellent. I personally like citronella. .

I have a citronella candle for the outdoor patio, and the scent has never bothered me. Caution to those who do NOT like citronella- this spray has a very strong citronella aroma to it, so buyer beware. I wouldn’t really call this a disadvantage, but I realize there are some people who dislike the smell.

The other thing that disappoints me is the dirt factor. It is a wipe and spray, but I have noticed that where I spray the dirt can stick to it. Parts of Arizona are dusty, sandy places, and the dirt sticks easily.

At shows, I do make a point of wiping my horse between classes or before I enter the ring to remove any dirt that has clung to the sprayed areas. The dirt does remove easily, and the coat is still shiny underneath from the lanolin. This, to me, is the only true disadvantage I could find. BUT it works so well repelling bugs that I will deal with the dirt 😊

Pyranha Fly Spray has tons of amazing reviews on many different websites, many people prefer this product because it works. This is the only fly spray I have purchased for the last couple of years and the only one I will continue to use on my horses in the future. What is your favorite fly spray?
