The Horses

Chateau de Laumiere has extensive horse grounds. Guests can walk over to the stables whenever they like to see their horses. They are also allowed to spend as much time with their designated horse as they wish. They can help with turnouts, grooming, and even see the foals on this horse holiday.

The Chateau has some impressive stock. All the horses used for riding can be seen on their website, complete with photographs. Breeds range from Meren, Selle Francais, Andalusian, Lusitano, and Normandy Cobs to name a few.

All are well-trained and are accustomed to new riders and the French countryside. Many of the horses had previous jobs. One was used in Pony Club, and another was even retired from jousting in medieval tournaments to join the Chateau family. There are sizes and breeds to accommodate everyone on your riding holiday in France.

The Riding

The riding opportunities during your stay at the Chateau are extremely flexible. You can ride as much or as little as you want to. Morning rides offer up to three hours of riding if you so desire, and each morning offers a different ride and new things to see.

All the riding you will do at the Chateau is with English tack. The horses are well-trained and adaptable to both experienced and inexperienced riders. The horse trainer and care giver is Tanya, and she can help you gain some confidence with your horse and help you along the way. She can also explain the breeding program at the Chateau and take you to see the foals (depending on the time of year.)

Hacks through the French countryside allow guests to see the neighbors, charming French residences, and large homesteads that are sprawled throughout the Southern France area. Riders will have the opportunity to trot and canter on the rides and guests have reported occasional sightings of a French farmer and his herd of sheep.

The Area

The southern region of France, especially the location of this horse holiday has some advantages. The area is quiet, with few cars and large homesteads and farms. There is, however, lots to do and see. Nearby there are excellent fishing opportunities, as well as golfing, canoeing, hot air balloons, hang gliding, boat trips, and some of the best French cuisine you will ever have.

This region of France is especially interesting. Originally, it was part of the Aquitaine. The Aquitaine was owned by the British for many years and was ruled by Eleanor of Aquitaine- mother to Richard the Lionheart. After the Hundred Years’ War, France annexed the region.

The rich history of the region can be seen in the surrounding towns and castles. The Chateau has experience and the knowledge of the area and can help guests see the best of the area during your stay.  There is a substantial list of towns, castles, and villages to see and many are located not far from the Chateau.

The Chateau de Laumiere

The Chateau de Laumier is the highlight of the trip. How often can you say you have stayed at an authentic French château?  It was originally built in the sixteenth century by Morlhon de Laumiere. It had two wings, one of which was demolished after it was sold to help the original owners with their failing fortune.

The current owners have continued the successful restoration of the Chateau – complete with 16th century fireplaces and the original stone staircase. With over 100 acres of land, the Chateau provides the ultimate French escape steeped in rich history and beautiful surroundings.

The Chateau has a swimming pool, beautiful block stables, a library, views of the French countryside from all of the rooms, a cross-country course, and stunning garden areas – all available for guests to enjoy during their riding holiday at the Chateau.
