In the vast expanse of the Sand Wash Basin in Colorado lives hundreds of mustang horses. These mustangs are allowed to run free on the 150,000 plus acres here. Over the years, the small bands and herds have populated and grown.
Here, the mustangs not only survive, they thrive.
Among these wild horses is the most famous mustang horse in America.
For years he has been an undefeated and a territorial force to be reckoned with. He has sired many members of many of the different herds and still calls the Sand Wash Basin his home.
Who is this infamous horse?
Why it is Picasso of course.
Picasso’s name truly suits him. His coloring is absolutely stunning. He is an equine masterpiece. Although it has been reported as being smaller than many of the other stallions he is twice as fierce. He has won countless battles and claimed many mares as his own. His exact age is unknown, many estimate him to be in his late twenties or early thirties.
Picasso has fans all over the world. Facebook has several groups dedicated to the stallion and the mustangs of the Sand Wash Basin area with thousands of followers.
Many visit the area in hopes of catching a glimpse of the stallion, and even members of the BLM know of Picasso and his fame.
There has even been a Breyer horse made after his image!
As the years have passed and Picasso has aged, he no longer can keep mares in his band. He has lost to younger stallions and now roams his Basin alone. While some people are concerned about Picasso’s age and health, others argue to let the stallion be.
Picasso is an American mustang legend. He has survived well beyond the average age of a mustang. While he looks thinner and older, pictures show him looking content. He lives a quieter life now in the Basin which has been his home for his entire life. Photographers have documented his life and he has shown the world that he lived life on his terms – free.
