The Story of Goliath and Red Lady

There is no better story than that of a family being reunited. This is the story of a family of mustangs finding each other after they had been captured and separated. Goliath is a massive black mustang that is well-known throughout the horse community. He had been photographed with his small band before he was rounded up and put up for adoption.

Separated and Sold

A mare called Red Lady was a known member of his herd, and she too was put up for adoption and adopted. She was also carrying his last foal (Goliath was gelded), and as luck would have it, Skydog Ranch learned of their separation and joined forces with Red Lady’s new owner to bring them together forever- no small feat.

Skydog Ranch is known for rescuing and reuniting mustangs that are captured, usually in BLM roundups. The horses are monitored, brought back to health, and released from smaller enclosures (once they have been deemed healthy enough) to larger enclosures where they can roam hundreds of miles in the sanctuary located in Oregon.

A Family Reunited

Red Lady and Goliath were reunited, but they could only accomplish this because photographers had documented the herds before their capture. Otherwise, many mustangs go their separate ways because no one knows exactly who is in their family. Goliath and Red Lady had been photographed before, and it is this prior documentation that Skydog was used to piece together a family that had been torn apart.

Skydog knew of Goliath’s popularity and created a fundraiser to get the funds needed to adopt the popular stallion. They won the bid, and they moved Goliath to his last home, free from the threat of being captured or sold ever again. The video below is that of Skydog Sanctuary and the reunion of Goliath and his lead mare, Red Lady, who was carrying his last foal. (All video rights and credits go to Skydog Sanctuary.)
